This series includes one of my  favourite images and represents life in the suburbs of Shanghai.  There has been frantic construction going on for several years now to place Shanghai in the best infrastructure position possible.  The domestic Hong Qiao Airport recently opened a brand new terminal and this happened in conjunction with a new metro link, new high speed rail link and new elevated expressways going just about everywhere!

This is one of the roads yet to be finished.  One of the locals told me that next year it would link to another stretch of elevated road, and then he pointed to a similar piece of road in the far distance also hanging in space and disconnected!

The family appearing in this image is a happy accident – they just happened into the frame at the right moment and for me the little girls’ expression is just perfect!

This and similar images can be seen in my main portfolio under both the recent work section and the editorial section on Building China.

Originally shot in almost a year ago today in 2009. This image is now part of a small collection I’ve included to the Portfolio competition of the UK Photographer of the Year 2010 competition.  Hopefully it will cause some interest.  For more details go to http://www.photoradar.com/photographer-of-the-year

Shanghai :: September 2009

This is another image I have re-edited for the UK Photographer of the Year 2010 Portfolio section of the competition.  It is part of 10 images which document the building of roads out near the new;y developed area of Hongqiao Airport in Shanghai.

Shanghai :: September 2010

New roads seen in Shanghai.  Sometimes the symmetry can be pleasing on the eye!

Shanghai :: July 2010

The roads that allow you to enter and exit the elevated roads (or goajia) are sometimes quite spectacular in themselves.  This one curves beautifully from the expressway to the road below.

This is one of the new Expressway roads opened earlier this year in Shanghai. Caught at a quiet time, but believe me it can get busy!
