Rabindranath Tagore renowned Indian poet and philosopher, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, the first Asian to receive this honour. India’s National Anthem “Jana Gana Mana” was composed by him. He visited Shanghai thrice leading to a profound friendship between him and the Chinese poet Xu Zhimo. Tagore stayed twice at Xu’s residence (close to this statue). This bronze bust of Tagore was presented to the Luwan Disrict People’s Government of Shanghai on 30 May, 2010 by H.E. Shrimati Pratibha Devisingh Patil, President of the Republic of India on the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China.
